Shankar,
maybe you are right as I was always saying the Sa acutally was starting from the Ma note....if you take Ma note as "Ma' itself it becomes Sudha Saveri.

Hi,
I feel that it might be one of Raga Durga ( presented in Madhyama Sruthi) or Puriya Dhanasree.
Raga Durga is one half-step below Sa and Pa. We use only sharp notes for durga.

Shankar and others,
Taking the discussion on Raga Pahaadi the following link gives more details of Raga Pahaadi
http://www.soundofindia.com/showarticle.asp?in_article_id=60
I have pasted some lines for discussion
Raga Pahadi is said to belong to Bilawal thaat. Superficially, Pahadi has the same notes as do Bhopali and Deshkar and Shuddha kalyan (Mohana Kalyani). Raga Pahadi is sung with Ma as Sa, (like Piloo). Having done that, it is sung chiefly in the lower and middle octaves, With Ma as its Sa, Dha now becomes Ga, which can be treated as the vadi. Stressing the lower Dha makes this raga beautiful. This raga is very popular in rendering thumris, ghazals and bhajans. It is sung at all times. Its Aroha and Avaroha are as follows:
Aroha: S R G P D S'
Avaroha: S' D P G R S.
Does this mean that we have to still use the Base Sa as the sruti and start from Ma (which in case we will be playing Sudha saveri) or change our sruti to start our Sa on the Ma note..which in case makes it Mohanam.
Can anyone clarify

Dear All,
To add to the above I have assumed Ma as M1 not sure whether it is M2!
- From: Indrajith (@ 203.145.157.94)
on: Fri Jan 16 02:28:14 EST 2004
By anyway if it belongs to bilawal, it should be M1 Right?
It cannot be mohanam if we perform it in Madhyama sruthi.
By the way , better we say simply as "performed in madhyama sruthi, than like Ma on the Sa note or something else". Let's keep it simple.

Change: It should be Sa on the Ma note

Indrajith,
Thanks for the explanation..I was talking about M2 only because in the article there is a reference on Mohana Kalyani.
What exactly is madhayam sruti and thats what I wanted to know ,do we need to tune the tampura to play Ma Sa Ma instead of Sa Pa Sa

on: Fri Jan 16 06:14:29 EST 2004
Pradeep!!
Exactly. Cool work.
While you are playing on Madhyama Sruthi, In Electronic Sruthi Boxes we use to tune the Pa note to Ma. So it sounds like Sa.
In case of Tanpura we generally will skip the Pa string to create the feel. Just because it takes atleast 1 Hr to tune the Tanpura to perfection. We dont want to try it on stage. :-)
Wanted to insist on a point made above, While you perform maybe say, Suddha Saveri on Madhyama Sruthi .. It is No more Suddha Saveri. It is Something else. ( I dont know to Name it).
Keep it rolling.

Wow... great work pradeep. Whenever I heard Pahadi, it always used to give me a feel of mohana kalyani, and at times even mohanam.

2)Paathira mazha yetho...hamsadeepam paadi
3)Aakasha deepam yennum unarum ida yaayo... ( Kshenakattu)

'Vaarmazhavillae' seems to me like Nalinakanthi, because of the 'Sa Ga3 Ri2 Ma1 Ga3...' phrase in the pallavi. I don't remember how the rest of the song goes.

Rajesh: Sometime back I promised to browse the local book stores for books on Music Therapy. I found one by Davis,Gfeller and Thaut professors in Coloradao state univ and Univ of Iowa. The book begins with the following quote:
Music exalts each joy, allays each grief,
Expels diseases,sotens every pain,
Subdues the rage of poison and plague
John Armstrong 1744
The use of music for healing has been there from middle ages. The book cites two papers published in 1841 with the title 'Medical Powers of Music'.
It recommends 'Ave Maria' by Franz Schubert for relief from insomnia.
I have not finished reading the book. If I find any reference to eastern music I will let you know.
Music therapy in US is used in hospitals, schools,
nursing homes etc.

raghu..
Thanks a lot for your concern.
Definitely you can help us.
Kindly let me know your mail id.
There is a beautiful book called:malayala chalachitra sangeedham 50 varsham"
from that book we collected the entire songs, films
scored by MBS.
It comes to 64 films which include RRs done by him.
Now we are into collecting the audio.I think we could manage to get songs of about 28 films.
If I am not able to get those songs, you need to help me out from your collections.
:)
thank u..

And that is the biggest advantage when we try to help out someone-you too gain knowledge.
