Sai, if you ever visit this page again, I'm pretty confident that 'Seer Kondu Vaa' is based on Pahadi raagam. 'Un Paarvaiyil' is probably also Pahadi based. It may also be Mohana Kalyani. :-))

does anyone know what raagas these songs are based on? they are Hindi songs: kabhi kabhi mere dil mein, Ae meri zohra zabeen, baharon fool barsao,mere naina sawan bhadon, ab ke baras bhejo, chaudhvin ka chand, lag jaa gale, tu jo mere sur mein ? I know these are to many but any help would be great.

It wud be very dicey to name 'unparvaiyil orayiram' under either pahadi or mohanakalyani, as there is a overwhelming use of "M2 P" in the arohanam to rule out the former and there is no mohanam phrase as such that rules out the latter.

With M2 and M1 both finding place, much be a kalyani candidate or one of its derivative.

I was referring to Bhavani.Great rendition by KJY.

Another one is from film Sindhubhairavi - "Moham Ennum teeyil" in Kanakangi raga - ultimate rendition by KJY!

To me "Panthuvarali" is a roudra raga...listen to the part "Pidaykkunnu Pranan" from the song "Sumuhurthamay" from the film Kamaladalam (Malayalam). The whole song is a ragamalika going like Hamsadhwani - Abhogi - Saramati - Panthuvarali - Madhyamavati.

If you say 'Un Paarvaiyil' is a candidate for a Kalyani janya, I know of three Kalyani janyas with the Madhyamam as the bhaashaanga swara: Hameer Kalyani, Saranga, and Yamuna [Yaman] Kalyani. Of these three, I believe Yamuna Kalyani allows for the most freedom. I haven't noticed any Hameer Kalyani or Saranga phrases in 'Un Paarvaiyil.' Thus, most likely we can map it to Yamuna Kalyani raagam, although I could still be in error.... :-/

Yeah, I think Yamuna Kalyani is a fairly accurate raaga designation for 'Un Paarvaiyil.' Other songs that may be based on this raaga include 'Neeyillaatha Pothum Yengum' (Ilamai Kolam), 'Geetha Sangeetha' (Anbe Sangeetha), 'Devan Koyil Dheepam Ondru' (Naan Paadum Paadal), 'Yamuna Aatrile' (Dalapathi) and 'Chinanjiragu Nillu' (Kannukkul Nilavu). I also know of a classic Malayalam song in this raagam, 'Ksheera Poovukkul Kumma Kurinjugal' from the film Dhanam (Ravindran).

Kalai paniyil - Gayathri

Paatu thalaivan & Yaar veetu roja - YamanKalyani? (idhaya kovil?)

Probably because 'Paattu Thalaivan' and 'Yaar Veettu Roja,' at least, do not seem to faithfully adhere to any one raagam. :-))

hello Madhu, the song gnabagam varudhe from Autograph is set in Sivaranjani.Re:Kaalai thenral padi varum - uyarnndha ullam is set in MohanaKalyani. Very interestingly the songs from Idhya Koil are all set in Maykkum melodies! 1.Yaar veettu roja poo poothatho - is Kalyani.
2.Paattu thalaivan padinal- Sankarabharanam.
3.Koottathile Koil pura- is ABOGI/Sriranjani combo
4.Naan padum paadal- is set in ?Ranjani
5.Vaan uyarntha Solaiyile- guess! Sivaranjani!

Well Vel, I can say that 'Ellorudaya Vaazhkai' that you have listed as Subhapanthuvaraali uses Ma1. Maybe you should try playing out the whole song, and see what swaras are used?

Also, 'Rajathi Raja' that you have listed as Shanmugapriya, pls. note that if you play the Shanmugapriya scale, then in the pallavi, you won't touch the Shadjam at all. Thus, I don't think Shanmugapriya is a good raaga to have mapped the song to.

if you dont mind , can u provide me with a list of tamil film songs composed by harris jayaraj and the ragas that they belong to?? i hope i`m not giving you too much of trouble . . esp songs from 12B, saamy, kovil, kaakha kaakha and so on . . .what can i do ??? there is abundant information on raga`s of ilayaraja`s songs , but hardly any on harris jayaraj`s compositions . .
