Pradeep-can right away remember a song for eg of D2 usage-mArgazhi thingaL from sangamam-i cant remember the words of the line-it's the last but 1 line in the 1st charaNam (which Janaki sings).The swaras go like PPSSN2D2D2...

Raaga Shanmukhapriya. It has been used with elegance by IR for a long time. It can fit in to any emotion. Songs like "Sollayo Vai thirandhu" - mogamul , "Ooru vittu Ooru vandhu" - karagattakkaran, Kaadhal Kasakkudhaiyya etc.. Gives you the exact picture of how it can be used to fit all moods. Is there any other raga ( or list of Ragas) that can fit any mood ( with proven examples).
Please let us know.

I feel Mohanam can also be used to fit in any mood.There is even a "Suprabatham" song in Malayalam using Mohanam

Pradeep ..at first I thought it was in SSaveri,later switched on to Mohanam.Shankar confirmed it was Mohanam ;again u restarted it ..:)and it goes on and on..

Yeah Subapantuvarali is played ..never noticed it before..maybe to add more sad overtones to the song.I also heard other songs in the same film (Mazha),are the following ragas correct ...

1)gehyam harinama deyam(Charukesi)
2)Aashdam paadumbol(Amrithavarshini)
3)Aaradyam Parayum(Mohanam)

Also I have been trying to find the raga for "Suryakireedom veenodunju" from the Mohanlal film Devasuram ..does anyone know..

I have another question: is Yamuna Kalyani simply a nishaada varjaya janya of Kalyani? Is there any special gamakam and/or parogayams required to bring out this raagam's flavor?

I used to hear from my friend that yaman kalyani is got by singing kalyani in madyama sruthi ..... can anybody please elaborate.... didn't get the point

Pruv & Shankar,

The raga is simillar to Yaman Kalyan of the Hindustani. This is classified as bhashanga and desiya raga. It is a sampoorna raga and the shuddha madhyama ( M) appears in vakra prayogas in the avarohana such as g M r and g M g r s. A nominal arohana/avarohana is like :

s r g m p d n s" - s"n d p m g M r s

Raganidhi, says that there are two versions of this raga. According to that , the second does not employ the shuddha madhyama. It skips the nishada and the arohana/avarohana is s r g p m p d s" - s" d p m s g r s. This is not in practice. Perhaps because the scope of the raga is limited, it is often rendered in madhyama sruti.

Hey... I heard the song Aalila... again and again.
Tell you what, it is in the raga Pahadi.
Other famous songs in Pahadi are Kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein,Kuch Kuch hota hai,Chaudavika chaand ho,Payoji meine raam rathan (Meera bhajan).
Pahadi is very similar to mohanam, or probably mohana kalyani.
Listen to the song..... see the madyamam comming.
I am almost sure about 99% that Aalila is in pahadi.
Experts clarify !!!!
