Hari, what did you mean by Bhavani? Do you mean Bhavani, the janya of Bhavapriya without the Pa? Or did you mean the 41st Melakarta Paavani?
BTW, how are raagas Thodi or Bhairavi unmelodious? I know they are very phrase-specific raagas that require special gamakas. But still, I have heard a few good melodious songs in these raagas, namely 'Thirupaarkadalil' (Swami Iyyappan), 'Gangaikkarai Mannanadi' (Varusham 16), and there's this one KJY devotional song that's set to Thodi raagam that was pretty good.
I think Kapi raagam is so popular because it's neither a major or a minor raagam but both, and also it allows for usage of 10 of the 12 swarams (Sudha Rishabam and Prathi Madhyamam have nothing to do with this raagam). It's my theory.
Raj, I don't know how to get ahold of any Karnatic books. That's why all the information on Karnatik music I get from the internet. :-))

Ram,
Priya or Priya initial two lines seem to SB but then the scale changes from Minor to Major with G3 and N3 as well..not sure which raga though.

I know this song has been discussed over and over ..Nila Kagirathu( Indra),Is this based on Bihag or Hamir Kalyani..
The notes rendered during the interlude seem to be Bihag..I would be appreciate if someone can discuss the various raga deviations in this song.

Pradeep, probably Narad may be happy as we know "Naradhar kalagam nanmaiyil mudiyum" :)
purv, my query to you about the song "isai arasi" in thai mookambigai. is it sallaabam or vasanthabhairavi? Iam under the impression it is sallaabam but I have also heard some people claiming it to be vasanthabhairavi or are they one and the same???

title song from the film Sugamo Devi (mallu) is set in Bhairavi.. there are some toehr songs also in bhairavi.. dont know whether there is a shred of melody less in it...

Vasantha Bhairavi takes away the Pa from Vakhulabharanam.
Sallapam goes further and takes away the Ri AND the Pa from Vakhulabharanam.

Isai Arasi is in Sallabam, also known as Soorya - Nithyashree sings a delightful Classical number in this Raga.

Looked over the notation of 'Nila Kaiygirathu', and I can't say what it is, but I can say that it is definitely NOT Hamir Kalyani. The other raaga, Behag I've heard of it, but I couldn't identify it if I heard it.

Thanks for the time spent...Even I am not sure whether its Behag ,this song is listed under HK and Behag on some sites...
I will try to put a couple of lines on Bihag , what I know of from "Web browsing",anyone pls correct if theres something wrong..I have extracted info from some other sites as well.
Bihag is an Hindustani raga under Bilawal/Shakarabaranam which also has M2 in its avarohana ,in Carnatic its called Behag(i=e) or Hindustani Behag

R2 and D2 are the weak swaras and normally slided over.One of the common sancharams found are
PM2G3M1G3...
You can hear the same swarsas at the start of mallu song Nava Mukunda hare(Deshadanam).
Some of the other sancharams are G3R2S and ND2PM1P where R2 and D2 are just glided over..Ni and Ga being strong swaras.
There is an alternate prayagom SM1GP which is used in the interludes of "Nila kaigurthu" which made me think of this raga for this song but I think thats not correct from an overall perspective.
When this raga was taken into Carnatic RG3M1P prayagom was also used in the arohanam
There are different variants to this ragam called Maru Bihag ,chandi bihag etc..
Some of the film songs in this ragam are
1)Sonnalum (Kathal Virus)..The first couple of lines
2)Swasame(Thenali)
3)Nava Mukunda hare(deshadanam-mallu)
4)koi gatha main so jatha(yesudas old hindi).
its a shringara raga and mostly used for love songs.

I haven't witnessed any changes in Vel's ilaiyaragam database.
Anyway, anyone want to investigate whether or not 'Naan Irukkum' from Azhagiya Kanne, which was recently featured in the SOTD is based on Hamsanadham, Gambheera Nata or Amruthavarshini raagam? It sounds as if it could be either one of these raagams, in the singing parts, at least.

'Maanitha Sevai Throgamma Kalai Vaani Neeye Sol'-- the raagam is Poornachandrika, a Shankarabharanam janya.

Guys, I would like some input. What are some raagas that are good for roudram raasa? Or in other words, what are some ragas that effectively portray anger and hatred? I know Athana can be counted as one. Others??

I heard Gambheera natai is called Yudhdha Ragam (raga for war). By listening to film music usages, i think revathi, chandrakouns, simmendramadhyamam, vakulabhranam and to an extent sivaranjani might fit your requirement.
