In one of the IR interview, he says all the good songs were his own effort (He quotes Maalaiyil Yaaro-Kshatrian, Director ketta naan potteruppen? ) Whereas ARR says the songs are obtained by director( In response to question whether he reserves best songs for Manirathnam, he says he is open but director extracts good music). Not surprisingly no comments about bad songs.

I think the reality is both(self-driven and director driven), for almost all MDs. Maalayil yaaro of kshatriyan and Manjolai kiLi thaano maan thaano were examples of self-driven (as told by IR himself) and thoongaadha vizhigaL rendu of agni nakshatram, paruvamae pudhiya paadal paadu of nenjaththai kiLLaadhae are examples of director driven. Basically MDs need inspiration/motivation. In IRs case till 90s he had self-motivation also hence he could give the likes of maalayil yaaro even if the directors didn't insist for such a song. ARR's case is a bit different, though he is like IR of till 90s for self-motivation, almost all the directors he work with are of the type motivating the MD (in other words "get what you want" type). So, for argument sake, even if ARR doesn't have self motivation he gets the other form of motivation. Thats why ARR says "the songs are obtained by Dirs". This is not an escapism from ARR's part. But there is an inherent danger also in this approach, if ARR works constantly in a situation where he needn't have to have a self-motivation, after a while if he is to work with not-so-motivating directors he might find difficult. I guess(IMHO) the recycles from hindi to thamizh like Star, jodi might be due to that the directors (pravin gandhi etc) are not of the type of manirathnam, priyadarshan, ramgopalvarma, shankar. So when they asked for tunes like doli sajakkae rakhna for jodi in thamizh they(dirs) were happy when he(ARR) gave them as such. But one point to note, i guess, jodi has one thamizh original, which shows that ARR still uses his self-motivation factor. Another example could be edhu sugam sugam from vandicholai chinna raasu, a self motivated song, i guess.

I think the entire film VCCR should have been some 90% self motivation. Had he listened tothe dir, and composed other songs to in the style of parotta, then it would have been an hell of an album. But, 3 out of 5 songs were real gems in that film. Even in the other two, one song's BGM was used in rangeela's 'yaaron sulo zara' song and it became a great hit, which goes to prove that some of arr's not that best can still be the best some where.

I remember IR telling in one interview that the songs composed for Kamal's movies are better than those for Rajini simply because Rajini accepts whatever is given while Kamal opts for only the best. This goes to show that even IR was motivated by actor/director.
See Devan for instance. The songs are bland only because there is nothing to offer there, compared to a film like Kutty which had a fantastic story line

I think Music is always self motivation. IR nicely put it as "our kaadhali kadalanai nenaichu padadum, adhukku aayeram padal podalaam". Also, in terms of rerecording, director is not saying to tune it in particular way, but still IR does wonder. Thankar bacchan gave the azhagi script to IR months before actual shooting so that IR can conceive the music score. many times director could not raise to IR standards(Example, NASAR said that for devadai he could not follow IR sample tunes and finally left to IR to decide the tunes).
