In bollywood there are many Period films coming up now and then like Legend of B'Singh, Lagaan, Earth, The Rising to name a few. But tamil film industry hasn't given many movies like that. What could be the reason? Is it that we haven't had such characters in our history?

I think Sivaji has done some Period Films. For example, Veera Pandiya Kattabomman and Kappalottiya Tamilzhan. Kattabomman was a BO success movie

Siraichaalai - another one in the flops list.
Nadodi thendral - story gave the opportunity of making an excellent period movie, but BR turned it into an ordinary love story.
the only hit and talked about movie that comes to mind is Veerabandiya Kattabomman. great efforts by Sivaji and Bantulu. there is ample opportunity for film makers to follow the same story line of this movie. after all british started their indian empire from Madras and fought their first war in Arcot.
