srini,
enakku oru asareeri sollichi...only if u talk abt gana ragas, "knowledgeable" people will participate.
Source of that asareeri http://www.forumhub.com/indcmusic/10768.09.41.42.html

I partially agree with UnbiasedFan. Talking about ragas like Katyayani, Niroshta, kadhambini alone does not make one cool. Might be should stop talking of notes and get in to the real things.
I agree with the name list he has provided for being Pro IR always.
Might be this is not a place for people who are Pro Carnatic. LOL.

Just because one doesnt have many keerthanais to fall back upon to make scholarly comparisons, it does not take away anything from a film song painstakingly or (rather effortlessly) created in a particular "rare scale", like kathyayini.
As "unbiased_fan" is right when he says he wants to talk abt "gana ragas", dont lesser souls like us have the liberty to be excited abt "rare scales"?

I totally agree with Vel. Songs in kalyani or hamsadwani or charukesi can be discussed at the comfort of one's home.It does nt warrant a forum like this. This forum shud be used to discuss usages of rare ragas in film songs so that people like me who only have awareness of carnatic music and are not experts at it, can benefit from this forum.
Also, I would totally disagree with 'unbiasedfan'. IR is a prodigy in music. I cant think of an MD who has used carnatic music in films in such a marvellous manner. I dont deny that other MD's have also used ragas in their songs. but, WHO THE HECK CARES??.
I just cant think of a number like 'Sorgame endralum' from 'ooru vittu ooru vanthu', where IR has used hamsanadham in a folk styled song. Simply Stupendous!!!. No music director in this world can even try to match IR. This forum has to be IR centric. I dont find even a single reason to deviate our focus from IR.

what raga is the song 'Partha vizhi partha' from guna based on?. Is it chandrajyothi or paavani?.
Also, plz tell me the difference between CJ and paavani
(sorry if this has been discussed earlier)

No, srini. 'Metti Oli Kaatrodu' is based on Jog, a Hindusthani raagam. This raagam uses the notes Shadjam, Sathsruthi Rishabam, Anthaara Gaandhaaram, Sudha Madhyamam, Panjamam, and Kaishika Nishaadam. It may also contain Kakali Nishaadam. Essentially, Jog is a juxtaposition of raagas Sudhadhanyasi and Saavithri, as demonstrated in the song 'Metti Oli Kaatrodu.'
'Paartha Vizhi Paartha' is based on Paavani raagam, because of the presence of Ni3. Take away the Ni3 and you would have Chandrajothi. That is the difference between Paavani and CJ.
BTW, what does the phrase 'Gaana Raagam' mean? I've always wondered.

'Nanmai Nazhgum' in the dubbed movie 'Ezhumalaiyin Mahimai' is based on Chandrajothi raagam. I'm not at all sure if there were any other compositions in this raaga by other composers.

purv,
Given the lay man that u know i am, i hazard a definition here...
gana ragas literaly translated means "heavy" ragas. These are characterised by heavy gamakka usages and intricate phrases that very typically characterize the raga.
bhairavi, shanmugapriya, thodi, shankarabharanam, hamir kalyani, dharbari....
Srini,
Before it tends to get unpleasant (this Pro-IR thing), lets not to react anymore (here) on this topic, in this thread . You may try the link i posted earlier...that thread is really meant for people who are IR centric :-)

'oru poo ezhudhum kavidhai' is definitely not hamsadwani. It is majorly hamsanadham and i'm sure there are lot of anya swarams. mainly when UK improvises towards the end of the song.
Srini- Do this. Listen to 'enakkena erkanave' from parthen rasithen and 'poovasam veesum kanne' from anbe sivam and then listen to this song. As let know what you feel.
The difference between hamsadhwani and hamsanadham - swara wise - is not much. hamsanadham uses M2 where hamsadhwani uses G3. But bhavam and feelwise, they are a world apart. But, it is possible to get deceived because of their closeness in arohanam/avarohanam.

HAMSADWANI IS DIFFERENT
HAMSANADHAM IS DIFFERENT
COMMON THING YOU CAN SAY IS THAT BOTH HAS "HAMSA" IN THEIR NAMES.
YOU HAVE GUTS TO COMPARE THOSE TWO.
LOL.
