Among the percussion instruments used in Tamil film music, Tabla and Mridangam are perhaps the most common. However, Ghatam has a richness of its own that gives it a unique status. It has been used rather effectively in quite a few songs (e.g, Mayanginen mannan... from "Salem Vishnu"). Comments...

  Another rarely used percussion instrument is the thavil. ippa sameebathula kannalE (Jeans) paatula kEttEn.. How about earlier uses of it? Thillaana mOhanaambaaL springs to mind.. any others?

  Ravi - Have you forgotten the "inspirator" of the Kannoadu song, Singaara valeney deva? I recently saw SJ performing the song live, complete with thavil and nadhasawara players. Magnificient!

  The best use of the Ghatam as far as I know...is in "pOtri pAdadi ponne.." from Dhevar magan.
  
  Personally,I think the first interlude or BGM ,of that song is one of the best Illayaraja has ever scored.
  
  Raja has also used the Thavil....like in
  
  1. "Sandhaikku vandha kili.." from Dharma Durai.(Hope Iam right!)
  
  2. "Maankuyile.." from Karakatakaran.
  
  And I was just wondering....Did ARR use the thavil in "Maana madurai.." in Minsara Kanavu ?

  ARR used the thavil in "ottagatha kattikkO" excellent one! Also ARR gave a new touch to the 'double congo' ( pEru correctA?! )es in the 'bakthi paadal paadattuma' in pudhiya mugam.

  ARR used Thavil in "Vaani sathu kodi" and "Vaanil Eani podu" (film: puthiya manargal). He used ghatam and thavil in Jeans (Kannodu)

  hello tfm lovers,
  This discussion on ghatam reminds me of one laughable thing from the film 'balE pAndiyA'.
  in the song 'nEEyE unakku enrum nigarAnvan'(tms/???(can anybody say who sang that konnakkOl/nattuvAngam in that song?) BAlAji will be having a ghatam on his lap and plays. but the actual instrument used was mridangam(i guess). i don't know how our film people do such errors.

  How can we forget the ghatam usage in 'niththam niththam nelluch chORu' from muLLum malarum. In fact, the song had only two instruments, ghatam and Morsing (is the spelling right?), that too both classified under percussion instru. Are there any other songs which had only percusion instrus?
