Kavignargal Koattai Vitta Paadalgal
The above is the apt name for this discussion. In some of the earlier forums, we were discussing the beauty of the lyrics of some songs. Well, this is the opposite of that! As a normal human being, lyricists also have their good and bad days. Sometimes because of neram kaalam and soozhnilai, they are unable to come up with the best. IMO, the song discussed in another section, "Sippi irukkuthu" comes under this category. Some of you may not agree to this. But never mind let's have a discussion on this.
To begin with, I quote you two old songs which are favourite references of mine, whenever, old-song-lovers-and-new-song-haters(!) rave and sing praises about "meaningful" lyrics of oldies.
1. Parakkum, panthu parakkum, athu paranthoadi vilaiyaadum
2. Koonthal karuppu, kungumam sivappu!
Please don't come back and tell me that the above songs are lovely - I couldn't agree with you more. But my point is that the lyrics are not that of what is expected from a kavignar.

first correction in the 1st song, the correct lines are:
parakkum pandhu parakkum athu paranthOdi
"varum thoothu"
The situation: Hero (MGR) and heroin (S.Devi)
are playing badmitton and also expressing their
love for each other. I don't think any other
kavnjar would have written anymore appropriate

2. Kanadasan used to be in Congress before
writing "koontha karuppu". When he changed
his political afliation to DMK - he wrote
KARUPPU SIVAPPU - reflecting his new
political ideas.
The 3rd line of the song goes something like
"kondavaL mugamO uthay sooriyanin piRappu"
Again Udhaya sooriyan - DMK symbol.

The real sothappal varigaL in a good song is by
Vairamuthu - EramAna rOjAvE ennaip pArthu EngAthE.
VM wanted to finish the song by saying
"ennodu nee pAdivA sindhu"
then he was seraching for words rhyming with
"sindhu" - he came across "ponthu" - the word
sounded vugar - and only thing he can associate
"ponthu" is with "eli" - he tried some "eli
ponthu" related thathuvam - nothing came up.
So looked for other rhyming words and came up with
"thannIril mUzgAthu kAtRuLLa pandhu" - adadA
enna arumaiyAna vArthaigaL and thathuvam !!! (dha!)

My explanation for the 'pandhu' & 'Sindhu' goof-up is in that movie 'Ilamaik Kalangal' the heroine would try to avoid the hero due to some misunderstanding. Then the hero would sing this song in the pouring rain.
Thannerril moozhgadhu kattrulla pandhu - the heroine is full of love for the hero inside her heart but pretending that she is not - which is likened to a 'kattrulla pandhu' here.
Ennodu nee padivaa sindhu - so be yourself (don' pretend that you hate me) and
come along with me.

What does Ottagathai Kattikko mean ?
The problem is most of today's songs do not mean anything. Like in Muqabla song muqala (what does this mean) : strawberry/cowboy/playboy/jurassic park/jazz etc. These junk words are added to give a 'designer feel' to the songs. ARR does this quite frequently : unnecessary howlings, rap/voodoo chants all added to cover up the lack of a good melody.

You are right---these are really "goofy" filler lines, which may give a "designer" feel to those who wrote it, and those who do not understand it. But how about some of us who used to enjoy the words and melody together in TFM, and would like to continue to do the same?
You too picked up on the Jurassic park/jazz I'd talked about earlier. Coming back to your "strawberry": Strawberry kannaanadhu----does he mean eyes as red as strawberries with green lashes?
(It does pain me to see Vaali who wrote some good, strong lyrics in those days write such goofy, meaningless stuff--see the thread on Vaali's contributions.)
Is it just that lyrics are secondary to music, and therefore you can get away with anything today?

I think the song "eeramana rojavE" goes like this:
eeramana rojavE ennai parthu moodadhE
kannil enna sOgam theerum Engadhe en anbe Engadhe
I do not think there is anything wrong in the kavignar's karpanai because the heroine is compared to rOja and she is angry with the Hero and she closes all the doors at the Hero to express her anger. So, the first two lines suits the situation perfectly.

I think this will (or has it already) become an extension of an earlier thread : Nonsense lyrics. I think NOV wants where the lyricist had a great opportunity to write a great song but sothappufied.

In rural TN normally a bathroom has only 4 walls (with no roof, this is not a generalization though).When the heroine is tormented by the viraga thambam in the middle of the night she would opt for a cold shower (thalaikku mela thaNNi oothu) to get her feelings subsided. At the same time she doesn't want the others to know that she is going thru this (Akkam pakkam suththi paaththu). In the movie this scene need not have to be there (unless it is a T.Rajendar movie) because the lyrics would be just suggestive enough. But the starting line of the song Eadho mogam Eadho dhagam suggests some kind of viraga thabam involved in this song.
Hope this sounds convincing enough..

To me the nalam nalamaRiya Aval song from kAdhal kOttai seems to be
a futile attempt to copy some classics, the newest of which I could
remember is from abdul rahmAn (in his kavidhai about lailA majnu
kAdhal, majnu claims his name to be lailA). Your suggestion of the
intended meaning doesn't convince me.

I think I have given rise to some confusion. This topic is not to discuss nonsensical lyrics. Rather, it is to discuss on songs which were too simplistic, for some reasons or other - in other words songs that are not worthy of a good kavignar.
Having said that, I wish to commend Bones for his explanations. It is because of this discussion, that the secret behind Koonthal karuppu was unravelled. Although I must add, that Kannadhasan could have put in a little more effort (kavi-chuvai) to make the song more appealing. BTW, the 3rd line of the song is "kondavaL mugamO thaamarei poo" As far as "Parakkum" song, I like Bones' version better. The play on words is far better than the original!
Kitcha-thambi & Kanchana - By all means, have fun on this page! Let us look through the magnifying glass and maybe come up with instances where we are actually smarter than the lyricists!
Ravi - Your quote on "telephone mani pOl" seems to be like what Leoni has said. Although the guy is funny, I am unable to accept many of his arguments. Leoni may not have had the exposure, but surely you living in UK (or is it the US?) have more experience in different sounds from telephones?
Sathya - Sorry for the digression but what does "DiamaNdu means?

Maan kandein, maan kandein, maanei thaan naan kandei, naan pennai kaanein - is too beautiful to be considered simplistic. I'm sure you can see the poetic beauty in those lyrics.
Ilaya nilaa pozhigiradhey , and Vennilavey vennilave y have great lyrics with kavi-chuvai. I don't think they belong to this category.

One of my favorite IR-SJ song is Adi Aathadi
from Kadalora Kavithaigal. This song is almost well written with simple words defining the impact of Love on SathyaRaj and Rekha (what a wrong choice by BR. I mean Rekha.)
Vairamuthu could have used better phrases in some places and some places are too exotic to understand. I am giving part of the lyrics with my
athigaprasangithanama comments...
Ippadi naan aanadhuille buddhi maari ponadhille
munne pinne nerndhadhille mooku muzhi verthadhile

Gokul - you coming to the rescue for Athanda ithanda is admirable! But you haven't pointed out ANY redeeming factor concerning the lyrics (especially the opening) of the song.
2. I think you were confused with the wordings in the Adi athaadi song. It goes like this:
Ippadi naan aanadhilleh buddhi maari ponadhilleh
munneh pinneh neirndhadhilleh mooku nuni verthadhileh
So it makes perfect sense!
"kannipponnu kannukkulleh kaththichchandeh kandaayoa" - I am sure you have heard of eyes being compared with vel, which is a aayutham. So the kaththi chandeh is being performed by many such weapons in his loved one's eyes!!! Acceptable?
"Especially the Hero's total surrender to heroin" (??) - I think you missed a very important "e" here" Haha - just joking!!
